THE NEIGHBORHOOD
Between Lake Apopka and the Beltway, the west-Orange city that quietly outgrew its own downtown.
THE STORY
Ocoee sits in west Orange County between Winter Garden and Apopka, with Lake Apopka to the north and the SR 429 Beltway to the west. Settlement began in the mid-1850s when Dr. J. D. Starke led a group into the area to work the fields near the lake, and the town grew after the Civil War. It is now the third-largest city in Orange County.
The historic core runs along Bluford Avenue, where a two-storey wooden building was replaced by a brick one in the early 1920s. Parts of the 1991 film My Girl were shot along Bluford Avenue just south of McKey Street, which is the sort of detail long-time residents mention before they mention the schools.
Health Central is the other anchor. West Orange Memorial Hospital closed in 1993 and re-emerged as Health Central on an 80-acre campus here, with 216 acute-care beds. That campus and the SR 429 corridor together carry the city's commercial spine and a good share of its employment.
The inventory runs from historic cottages near the Bluford core, through mid-century neighbourhoods, to master-planned pods along Clarcona Ocoee Road and West Road including Vizcaya and Windermere Landings. The West Orange Trail, 22 miles of rail trail on old railroad alignments through Oakland, Winter Garden and Apopka, passes close enough to matter to buyers who want it.
Ocoee is served by Orange County Public Schools. For buyers the case is reach: downtown Orlando via the East-West Expressway, the theme parks via SR 429 and SR 417, and a wider price band than neighbouring Winter Garden.
