Mims holds one of the most significant sites in Florida civil rights history, and most people driving U.S. 1 through north Brevard pass it without knowing.
Harry Tyson Moore founded the first NAACP branch in Brevard County. He was a school administrator and his wife Harriette V. Moore was a teacher, and in 1938 he sued the school district for equal pay for Black teachers. Both lost their jobs in the county for that work. On Christmas night 1951 a bomb planted under their bedroom floor exploded. Harry died the same day; the hospital in Titusville would not treat Black patients, and he died on the way to Fernald-Laughton in Sanford, about thirty miles northwest. Harriette died of her injuries nine days later, on January 3, 1952.
Their homesite is now the Harry T. and Harriette V. Moore Memorial Park, a 11.93-acre county park with a museum and a full-size replica of the family home standing where the original stood. It is a Brevard County Parks and Recreation site, open to the public.
