THE STORY
A city until 1969, and still an address.
Eau Gallie is a former city that people still name as one. John Carroll Houston IV became the first permanent settler in 1859, and the town served as the county seat of Brevard County from 1874 to 1878. It was independent from 1860 until 1969, when residents voted to join Melbourne. Locals have gone on calling it Eau Gallie ever since, and the real estate market treats it as its own address.
The name is French for rocky water. The Florida East Coast Railroad arrived in 1893 and shifted the settlement from agriculture toward a more mixed economy. Between 1885 and 1889 Captain Aaron Bennett built a boat yard and basin here, later the Eau Gallie Yacht Basin, considered the best safe deep-water harbour on Florida's east coast, and deep water is still what distinguishes this stretch of the lagoon.
The historic core is now the Eau Gallie Arts District, designated a Florida Main Street community in 2010. Highland Avenue is its spine, with the band shell, the Foosaner Art Museum and Museum School now owned by the Florida Institute of Technology, the Historic Rossetter House Museum and Gardens, the Eau Gallie Public Library, and the administrative offices of the Brevard Symphony Orchestra.
The Eau Gallie Causeway crosses the Indian River Lagoon toward SR A1A, and until the 1960s there were two separate cities at the western ends of the two causeways, Melbourne to the south and Eau Gallie to the north.
